The 12 Days of Christmas is a fun Christmas tradition, as well as a catchy Christmas carol! The song we all know and love, and sing each year, actually started out as a rhyme. According to some online sources, the lyrics were first published in 1780 without music, but the popularity of the verses led many composers to try accompanying the words with melodies. Today, we associate the rhyme with an arrangement composed by Frederic Austin in 1909.
Fun Fact: Frederic Austin was involved in the opera scene, and he was the one that added the dramatic flourish of the line, “Five Gold Rings”.
Fun Fact: Austin added the word “On” to the beginning of each verse; the original work started simply with “The” first day of Christmas.
